Family Practice
Family medicine provides continuing, comprehensive health care for the individual and family. It is a specialty in breadth that integrates the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences. The scope of family medicine encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system and every disease entity.
Family medicine is a three-dimensional specialty, incorporating (1) knowledge, (2) skill and (3) process. Although knowledge and skill may be shared with other specialties, the family medicine process is unique. At the center of this process is the patient-physician relationship with the patient viewed in the context of the family. It is the extent to which this relationship is valued, developed, nurtured and maintained that distinguishes family medicine from all other specialties.
Dr. Adams believes in treating the whole patient and the whole family. He began his career as an emergency room doctor, experience he says translates very well to family medicine. "In the ER, I also treated people of all ages with a wide variety of medical issues. It also helps me discern what is truly an emergency and what it is not, as well as handle many urgent conditions in my office."
Technology plays a big role in how Dr. Adams practices family medicine. Patients may email questions to the practice from home through a secure, complimentary online patient portal. Patients are encouraged to email Dr. Adams or Ms. Britt with questions or concerns, and are promised a prompt, personal reply.
"We simply treat patients the way we would like to be treated," says Dr. Adams. "We offer same-day appointments every day because if a patient is sick, he or she wants to be seen right away." Dr. Adams also describes a comprehensive approach to care, taking into account his patients' overall health and making recommendations for care that will help them live fuller, healthier lives.
