Our Care: Weight Loss

Weight Loss

Losing weight isn’t just about getting thinner.
It’s about getting healthier.

Obesity is a national epidemic. Some 65 percent of North Carolinians are overweight or obese. In addition, an estimated 24 percent of adult Americans have metabolic syndrome -- a precursor to Type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease caused by being overweight.

Much more than just an aesthetic issue, being overweight is a serious health concern. In fact, many chronic health issues are secondary to obesity. Medical science has long known that excess body fat increases a person’s risks for heart disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis and a host of other chronic diseases. Without question, patients who lose excess weight gain better health.

A Smart, Safe, Effective Weight-Loss Program—What Do You Have To Lose?

Carolinas Coastal Health is pleased to offer CORNERSTONE WELLNESS, MD—a physician-led weight loss and weight management program. It’s a personalized approach that gives you the knowledge and tools you need to lose weight—safely and permanently.

Cornerstone Wellness, MD is:

  • Physician Supervised— J. Wellington Adams, MD will do a health assessment on you before you begin the program, as well as monitor your progress and support you throughout the program. Your personal health risk appraisal is a highly detailed and comprehensive analysis of your controllable health risk factors.

  • Personalized— The program begins with a precise diagnosis of your metabolic requirements and body composition (lean body mass versus body fat.) This measurement determines your basal metabolic rate (the calories your body burns when completely at rest), which is crucial to customizing the program for you and you alone. Your basal metabolic rate, combined with your activity level, will determine your personal caloric energy equation to ensure safe loss of fat rather than loss of lean muscle.

  • Comprehensive—Other customized components of the program include personal menu planning, exercise recommendations (cardio and strength training), health education, and lifestyle modification activities.

  • Flexible—Some aspects of the program are optional, such as the use of convenient high protein-fortified shakes which ensure optimal nutrient intake while enhancing your weight loss efforts. Optional vitamin and mineral supplements are also available to support proper nutrient levels for healthy weight loss.

A Physician-Led Program Tips The Scales In Your Favor

Unlike some weight loss programs that focus on a specific number or ideal body type, Cornerstone Wellness, MD emphasizes obtaining a healthy level of body fat for your lean mass. Studies have shown that a modest 5 to 10 percent reduction in body weight (fat loss) can result in a significant improvement in controllable health risk factors.

Cornerstone Wellness, MD is a complete program that results in greater long-term weight loss, less hunger, increased energy, better compliance and greater health benefits than low calorie food alone. It succeeds because it focuses on maintaining muscle mass while losing fat, which affects metabolic rate—the key to successful weight loss.

Prescription drug program

These programs involve the use of FDA-approved prescription and diet pills to curb the appetite and jump-start the weight loss process. The programs also include individualized counseling and exercise components.

Modified program

This is a custom-designed plan with many options. Based on a number of factors, patients and our physician will decide which modified program will meet their needs.  A program will then be designed specifically based on these needs.

We give you the knowledge and tools you need to lose weight—safely and permanently.
